Background

The Education Local Expertise Centre Uganda (ELECU) is a national NGO dedicated to empowering Uganda’s most marginalized communities by improving educational outcomes for young people. We work towards sustained poverty reduction by increasing access to quality basic education, skills development, and fostering partnerships with likeminded  organizations, the Government of Uganda, and the private sector.

The Education Local Expertise Centre Uganda (ELECU) in partnership with Save the Children International is implementing a 24 months ECHO RISE Project in Rwamwanja and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements and the host communities. The RISE project aims to achieve increased access, retention and improved learning outcomes for out of school children and children at risk of dropout, including newly arrived refugees, out of school children, unaccompanied and separated children and children at risk, and provide life-saving education services at transit sites.

Position Title: Accelerated Education Program (AEP) Teacher (15 positions)

Duty Station: Kamwenge – Rwamwanja

Contract: 12 months, Renewable

Reports to: Lead AEP Teacher

 

Position summary

The main responsibility for the position is to teach primary level subjects and document day-to-day subjects with the aim of reintegrating the learners to the mainstream/regular schools. The AEP Teacher works closely with Lead Teacher, Teaching Assistant and Centre staff members to ensure all school activities are facilitated in good time and in professional standard.

Responsibilities

  1. Planning and delivering daily lessons and preparing schemes of work in close collaboration and consultation with the Centre Lead Teacher.
  2. Developing teaching/learning aids, other instructional materials to support learning processes.
  3. Providing classroom instruction according to the learning framework from National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) and strictly adhere to the agreed timetable.
  4. Selecting and using differentiated learner-centered teaching methods.
  5. Promoting a safe and child friendly learning environment that is conducive for teaching and learning.
  6. Continuous assessment of learners and provision of monthly progress reports in collaboration with the AEP Centre Lead Teacher.
  7. Maintaining record of learners including registration, enrolment, attendance and drop outs.
  8. Supporting learners’ participation in classroom, extra-curricular and school activities.
  9. Participating in community mobilization and sensitization on regular basis.
  10. Participate in class and departmental meetings organised within and outside school.
  11. Serve as teacher on duty based on schedule and school arrangements.

Qualifications

  1. A Grade III Teacher’s Certificate and Diploma in primary education is added advantage
  2. Registered with Ministry of Education and Sports and in possession of registration certificate Relevant teaching experience of at least two years.

Knowledge and Experience

  1. Fluency in both spoken and written English
  2. Ability to speak any local language commonly spoken by the beneficiaries (Congolese or Kirundi or Kinyarwanda or Kiswahili)
  3. Must be an innovative teacher, able to produce results amidst challenges.
  4. High integrity personnel to control the teaching materials available and demonstrate knowledge of teachers’ code of conduct.
  5. Willing to work within refugee community in     promoting access to education.
  6. Basic understanding of refugee situation and able to live within the refugee communities.
  7. Must be with skills to control large classes.
